Sitting on a slope near, but well up from Walter Fletcher Beach are the remains of Fort Montego.

We would not have noticed it were it not for the cannons among the overgrowth. Some stonework and these three George II twenty-four pounders are just about all that remains of the fort. The cannons date back to around 1810 and were fired more in ceremony than in anger. The Fort dates to the 1700s and has been under several national flags.
